Proton Therapy

Protons are an advantageous treatment approach for their ability to precisely deliver high doses of radiation to specific cancerous areas with minimal exposure and side effects on the body’s surrounding tissue. This “Bragg Peak” effect, a unique atomic property that only transmits energy from accelerated protons transmitted at the end of their path, which can be specifically adjusted to land right in the patients’ tumour. After the Bragg Peak, the dose drops to Zero. Properly selecting the proton energies, physicians plan the treatment protocol to ensure high doses of radiation are delivered homogeneously throughout the entire tumour area while saving healthy tissues.

Indeed, Dr. Frederick Vernamen, a radiologist at Cork University Hospital, stated that if proton therapy was as equivalently accessible and cost-effective as radon therapy, “there’d be no doubt in [his] mind about which treatment I’d prescribe every time.”
